Bible Study New Year 2016 -- Billie Hunt
And they commanded the people, “When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God being carried by the Levitical priests, then you shall set out from where you are and follow it. However, there shall be a distance between you and it of about 2,000 cubits (3,000 ft.) by measurement. Do not come near it, so that you may be able to see the ark and know the way you are to go, for you have not passed this way before” (Joshua 3,3-4 Amplified).
While praying about the New Year, the Lord spoke this line to me: “You have not passed this way before”. I had to look up the location in scripture, but when I read the passage in which this passage is found, it spoke to me about the coming year. I suppose every New Year is a “way we have never gone before”, but this year, I believe, is significant. It is an election year. Our nation and world is facing crisis in various ways. Individually, most of us are facing challenges also. So let’s examine these few verses and see what God wants to say to us about this year.

The Story:
This was the second time Israel had come to the border of their promise. The first time, when they were confronted with obstacles, they refused to believe God and enter into their possession. That entire generation had died and now their children (And Joshua and Caleb) once again found themselves at the border of God’s Promise. There will be obstacles to overcome to obtain your promise this year. There was a river that stood between Israel and their promised possession. Many of you have been believing God for promises of various kinds… healing, restoration, relational, financial… all kinds of promises, and there are obstacles that separate you from that promise. This is your year of possession so don’t allow those obstacles to stop you. Understand that God is going to lead you through those obstacles and these verses give us insight into how to overcome those obstacles and possess our promise. |

It will take courage to move forward. God spoke directly to Joshua in chapter 1: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9 NKJV). Because we need courage, we must listen to the entire Word God spoke to Joshua in chapter 1. First God reminded Joshua of the promise he had given to Israel and then He spoke of courage because He knew there would be obstacles.
Overcoming obstacles will require focus. “When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God being carried by the Levitical priests, then you shall set out from where you are and follow it. However, there shall be a distance between you and it of about 2,000 cubits (3,000 ft.) by measurement. Do not come near it, so that you may be able to see the ark and know the way you are to go, for you have not passed this way before” (Joshua 3,3-4 Amplified). Plunging into the waters of the Jordan river took great courage, but the secret to success was to “Keep Your Eyes on the Ark”. To the New Testament church, the Ark represents Jesus and The Holy Spirit. They were not to run ahead. They were to keep enough distance behind that the Ark was always within line of vision.
It was important that the people focus on the Ark, not the waters around them. This makes me think of Peter and Jesus walking on the water. As long as Peter kept his focus on Jesus, he was able to do something impossible to humans. However, when he turned his vision from Jesus to the storm around him, he began to sink.
It is difficult to keep our eyes on Jesus and the promise, rather than the whirling turmoil around us, but if we are to possess our promise and fulfill the promise God has for us this year, we must keep our focus on Jesus and follow the Spirit of God.
This year God is calling us to a new dedication. And Joshua said to the people, “Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you (Joshua 3:5 NKJV). Notice the responsibility for sanctification was on the people. We must set ourselves apart unto God, if we want to receive all that God has for us this year. I love the promise attached to that command: “God will do wonders among you”.
There is a new anointing available to us this year. And the Lord said to Joshua, “This day I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that as I was with Moses, so I will be with you” (Joshua 3:7 NKJV). I’m expecting new power in my life. I’m expecting new vision. I’m expecting new doors of ministry to open…
God is challenging us to make an impartation to those around us. Then Joshua spoke to the priests, saying, Take up the ark of the covenant and cross over before the people” So they took up the ark of the covenant and went before the people (Joshua 3:6 NKJV).
This year God is calling you to take your place as a spiritual leader. To face the obstacles before you with courage, and to focus on the Holy Spirit and to impart blessing to those around you.

- Courage energizes obedience
- Courage comes from “Focus” (which we will discuss in a moment).
- Courage comes from the Word (This book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success (Joshua 1:8 NKJV).
